Former student from Catholic University-Porto conquers Abbott Diagnostic Award

Hugo Sousa, graduated in Microbiology from the Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of Universidade Católica - Porto and currently researcher at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO), is the winner of the Abbott Diagnostic Award of 2017. The former ESB student, as the first Portuguese to receive the prize awarded annually at the Annual Congress of the European Society of Clinical Virology, which takes place this year from 13 to 16 September in Stresa, Italy.

The 35-year-old researcher - PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute - has spent the last 15 years at the IPO Porto, in the Virology Department, and is a researcher at the Molecular Oncology and Viral Pathology Group. After completing his Master's degree in Medicine, he is now fulfilling the Common Year of Medical Internship at the Local Health Unit of the Northeast.

It should be noted that the Abbott Diagnostic Award is a prize that is intended for doctors and doctorates with more than 10 years of scientific activity linked to laboratory diagnosis and can only be assigned once to a personality.
