9.5 million euros is the value that will allow SafeConsumE to be put into practice. The Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of the Catholic University in Porto participate in this project, together with 32 partners from 14 European countries. The project aims to contribute to reduce the risk of food poisoning, waste and to promote environmentally friendly solutions in Europe.

Funded by the EU largest research and innovation program, Horizon 2020, SafeConsumE will develop effective, sustainable and scientifically validated strategies so that food authorities, industry and the scientific community can help consumers to minimize risks in food, thereby, reducing the impact of food poisoning in Europe. Tools, technologies or products, communication strategies and education programs, or dynamic policy models will be some of the solutions to be implemented by 2022. In addition to help making the population healthier, the project aims at achieving sustainability, reducing waste and promoting the use of environmentally friendly solutions.

The project, coordinated by NOFIMA (Norway), will last five years and it is coordinated in ESB, by Prof. Paula Teixeira. At national level, SafeConsumE also has the participation of the Ministry of Education, the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Agrarian Sciences, Technologies and Agro-Food of the University of Porto (ICETA).
