Prof. Cristina Silva in the Management Committee of the COST Action "EUROCAROTEN"
The COST action "EUROCAROTEN" started its activities in April 2016 and for four years will have a multidisciplinary European network of researchers from 34 countries. The aim of EUROCAROTEN is to improve the competitiveness of the European agro-food industry and to promote health by coordinating research on carotenoids.
Carotenoids are versatile pigments that can be used as natural dyes, antioxidants, vitamin A sources and functional ingredients. Of the more than 750 known carotenoids only ten are being carefully studied, representing vast potential in terms of new scientific, technological and socio-economic knowledge.
As a result, the application of new technologies and / or high quality food, as well as the establishment of nutritional health promotion recommendations will be established. This COST action is intended to contribute for improving public health and reducing costs related to serious diseases.
EUROCAROTEN is coordinated by Professor Antonio J. Meléndez Martínez of the University of Seville, Spain. The group of Professor Cristina Silva is one of two Portuguese groups that are part of the Management Committee of this COST action. He is also the coordinator of the dissemination of this action and, in this sense, has already put online its website with all the information about partners, objectives and activities.
COST is a European international cooperation program whose mission is to support research activities through the framework of cooperation and interaction between researchers. COST actions thus enable advances in the development of scientific knowledge, contributing to the strengthening of Europe as a leader in R&TD.
