Irina Moreira has a degree in Biology from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto and a PhD in Biotechnology from Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. She has been working as a post-doctoral researcher at Centro Biotecnologia Química Fina (CBQF), since 2013. Her research is particularly focused on the removal of pollutants, especially biodegradation of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, by bacterial strains. She focused on the elucidation of degradation mechanisms, metabolic pathways of degradation, enantioselective mechanisms of biodegradation of chiral molecules, and on the study of degradation efficiency in bioreactors. IM also worked on the removal of persistent pollutants by means of adsorption and photodegradation using biomaterials developed from a by-product of the fish industry. She co-supervised 1 PhD and 1 master thesis and is co-supervisor of 2 1 PhD students. She was a reviewer of scientific journals and also for the IWA conference World Water Congress & Exhibition.
