BIOMA – Bioeconomy integrated solutions for the mobilization of the agrifood chain

Highlight

Bioeconomy integrated solutions for the mobilization of the agrifood chain, repositioning companies to more competitive and sustainable levels.

Abstract

The mobilizing R&TD project “BIOeconomy integrated solutions for the Mobilization of the Agrifood chain” brings together a broad consortium of 24 national entities in the agri-food sector, with the aim of repositioning companies in the agri-food value chain (AFVC) at higher competitive and sustainable levels, promoting an innovative ecosystem that enhance, in a concerted way, the adoption of integrated Bioeconomy solutions. To pursue this objective, the BIOMA project bases a set of research and development activities on the
following strategic vectors:

1. Sustainability: to develop a unique sustainability assessment methodology for the agrifood value chain - Sustainability Index for Bioeconomy -, based on the preparation of an automatic index supported by the digitization of critical points of action in the agri-food value chain;

2. Food waste: responding to the problem associated with food waste, through research and development of solutions for monitoring food waste in the HoReCa channel (hotels, restaurants and catering) and for combating food waste by increasing shelf life of the products;

3. Valorization of agro-food by-products and residues: to develop and implement different methods of extracting active substances at an industrial level, with the potential to give rise to new functional ingredients;

4. Traceability: investigate and develop a modular, AFVC-wide traceability solution (primary production, transport/logistics, transformation, retail/restoration and consumer) supported by an integrative, interoperable and inviolable digital platform;

5. Digital ecosystem: to develop an integrative digital platform supported by open field methodologies to demonstrate solutions in a real environment - Test Before Invest -, with the objective of enhancing the adoption of Bioeconomy solutions, as well as the digital transformation of the AFVC.
