Master's thesis receives Award from the Catalan Society of Nephrology

Carolina Fernandes Ferreira Alves da Costa, with a degree in Microbiology from ESB, finished her master's degree in July 2019, also at ESB/CBQF, with the defense of a thesis entitled «Oral urease-producing microbiota in chronic kidney disease patients».

This work, supervised by Professor António Rangel and co-supervised by Doctors Raquel Mesquita and Benedita Sampaio Maia, gave rise to an article published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology that has now been awarded with the 2022 annual award from the Catalan Society of Nephrology for the advancement and new perspective it brings to this area of knowledge.

The investigation involved, in addition to the Catholic University and the University of Porto, the Hospital de São João and the Instituto Português de Oncologia, both in Porto, and the Hospital Universitari Doctor Josep Trueta in Spain. As for Carolina, she is currently developing her PhD at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences within the same theme.
